Design and 3D Printing of Iowa Hawkeyes Lightsaber

Objective:
To design and 3D print a custom Iowa Hawkeyes-themed lightsaber as a commissioned Christmas gift for my sister’s brother-in-law, an Iowa Hawkeyes alumni. The goal was to create a unique, retractible, fully illuminated lightsaber that combined team pride and the style of Star Wars.

Design and Execution:

1. Concept and Design:
   Inspired by the iconic Iowa Hawkeyes, the lightsaber design features the team’s signature black and gold colors. The hilt was crafted to reflect traditional lightsaber aesthetics while integrating Hawkeye-themed elements, including team logos and symbolic design features that embody the spirit of the university.

2. 3D Printing:
   The lightsaber components were carefully designed and printed using high-quality 3D printing techniques. The process involved creating detailed parts for the hilt, blade, and cross-guard, ensuring a durable yet visually appealing build. The finished piece showcases intricate design work that merges the Hawkeyes’ identity with a classic lightsaber look.

3. LED Integration:
   To bring the design to life, LEDs were wired into the hilt, providing a vibrant glow that enhances the overall aesthetic. The internal wiring was carefully planned to fit seamlessly within the hilt, allowing for an even illumination that captures the eye while preserving the functionality of the saber.

4. Assembly and Finishing:
   After printing, each piece was meticulously assembled, sanded, and painted. The bold contrast between the black hilt and bright yellow accents creates a striking visual effect, further emphasizing the Hawkeyes theme. The final assembly included applying the Hawkeyes logo and other design details, resulting in a polished and professional piece.

Outcome:
The commissioned Iowa Hawkeyes lightsaber was a unique and personalized gift that perfectly combined team loyalty with imaginative design. The illuminated lightsaber not only serves as a display piece but also as a memorable tribute to Hawkeye pride. This project highlights my ability to blend creativity, technical skill, and customization to deliver a meaningful and visually stunning product.
